Intended Audience: Attendees should have some prior experience creating reports
Exploring the data model
In this section we will explore the data model that the organization has been provided. We will review the fields, tables, relationships and measures that have been built into the model.
- Review the Power BI Desktop interface
- Create an initial set of visuals
- Explore interactions, drill down/drill through
Selecting visuals
What kinds of visuals are supported by the existing data model and which ones aren’t? We will discuss data modeling principles and how the data model will determine what and how we can visualize the underlying data.
- Examine the existing relationships in the data model
- Create visuals that are supported by the relationships
- Explore visuals that cannot be created using the data model
Bookmarks, Buttons, Drill throughs
In this section, we will explore the design implications for larger, multi-page reports. We will talk about how to minimize the number of queries which can slow down report performance.
- Setting slicers with defaults
- Limiting interactions within visuals and across pages
- Avoiding high levels of granularity
- Use tooltips!
- Use filters on visuals
Conclusion
Good resources for further learning
General Notes:
- Participants are assumed to have some basic experience with creating reports and dashboards.
- We will not be covering the Power Query Editor in any meaningful way because this class assumes a data model.
- Participants will use their own devices and will be expected to have the latest version of the Power BI Desktop installed.
- Data files and a PBIX will be provided in advance
